A signal privately tells Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory you're interested. It is not a job application.
About the role
Do you have experience with signal processing, image processing, state estimation, modeling and simulation, or optimization?
Are you interested in applying your technical skills to challenging navigation and aerospace problems?
Do you enjoy working across disciplines to develop algorithms, build physics-based models, and analyze complex systems?
Do you like contributing to some of our country's most difficult national security challenges?
If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.
We are seeking an engineer to help us develop and analyze advanced navigation systems and algorithms supporting a variety of aerospace and missile applications. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team to apply a combination of signal processing, state estimation, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) image processing, photogrammetry, optimization, and physics-based modeling and simulation to solve challenging navigation problems.
We are looking for candidates who bring depth in at least one of these disciplines and are excited to broaden their technical expertise while working alongside specialists across navigation, sensing, estimation, and modeling and simulation.
As a member of our team, you will contribute to impactful projects supporting the U.S. Department of War and the warfighter. You will work alongside technical experts who have a passion for conducting state-of-the-art analysis and advancing our country's capabilities. Our well-rounded team of hardworking engineers believes in fostering an environment of continuous learning, collaboration, and mentoring.
As a Navigation, Modeling, and Simulation Engineer you will...
- Develop and analyze algorithms for advanced navigation systems using techniques such as signal and image processing, state estimation, photogrammetry, optimization, and sensor/data fusion.
- Work with EO/IR imagery, terrain and geospatial data, and other sensor data to develop and evaluate approaches for navigation and localization.
- Develop, implement, and analyze physics-based models and simulations of flight vehicles, sensors, environments, and navigation systems. You will use simulation to predict system behavior, identify potential limitations, and evaluate system performance.
- Apply Monte Carlo, probabilistic, covariance, sensitivity, and other analysis techniques to characterize system performance and support system-level design trades.
- Develop and evaluate estimation and optimization approaches for determining vehicle position, velocity, attitude, and other states from available sensor measurements.
- Interface navigation algorithms with flight system guidance and control algorithms and contribute to integrated system analysis.
- Support testing in laboratory, simulation, and flight environments, including post-test analysis of sensor data and navigation algorithms implemented in onboard software.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or other related technical discipline.
- Have at least one year of experience working with state estimation or navigation systems.
- Have experience in one or more of the following areas: signal processing, EO/IR or digital image processing, photogrammetry or computer vision, numerical optimization, or physics-based modeling and simulation.
- Have experience developing algorithms, mathematical models, or simulations and using them to analyze complex engineering systems.
- Have experience with MATLAB, C++ or other programming language.
- Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills and an interest in applying your technical background to navigation and aerospace systems.
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills, work effectively in a collaborative team environment, and be able to support multiple development efforts concurrently.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have a M.S. or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or other related technical discipline.
- Have experience with sensor models including inertial measurement units (IMU), global positioning system (GPS), or magnetometers.
- Have a desire to take on leadership and business development opportunities.
- Have experience with software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop development.
- Hold an active Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
