About the role
About SpaceComputer
SpaceComputer is pioneering the implementation of public blockchain technology aboard satellites. We are a world-class founding team with backgrounds in distributed systems architecture, cybersecurity, economics, open source software, and game theory. We are enabling the next generation of secure, decentralized infrastructure from space.
Role Overview
As an Aerospace Application Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in SpaceComputer, where you are responsible for designing and integrating aerospace compute systems for satellites based on distributed and decentralized protocols. You will serve as the main contributor on the aerospace front. The position is remote-first, with a preference for candidates based in the US or European time zones.
Responsibilities
- Drive Aerospace Compute Systems Integration:
Own and advance the hands-on embedded systems engineering and liaison for designing and integrating compute infrastructure suitable for deployment on satellites, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability for SpaceComputer’s unique requirements.
- Cross-functional Technical Leadership:
Engage deeply with the distributed systems team as well as aerospace hardware/software partners.
- Aerospace Sector Partnership Enablement:
Serve as the key engineering point of contact for partner collaborations; ensure technical requirements are translated into robust and commercially viable solutions.
- Strategic Planning and Risk Management:
Develop system architectures and strategies that reduce costs, mitigate risks, and anticipate future integration challenges for both engineering and commercial outcomes.
- Innovation & Learning:
Eagerly dive into new technologies and concepts, bringing fresh ideas to the frontier of blockchain-in-space.
- Collaboration & Autonomy:
Work productively in both solo and collaborative team environments. Mentor others or be mentored where applicable.
Required Skills and Experience
- Aerospace awareness and/or expertise:
Experience with aerospace systems, including compute payloads, spacecraft integration, or similar complex environments.
- Embedded systems experience:
Be comfortable with hardware, such as development boards running embedded Linux or RTOS, and other components, and know how to assemble them together. Ideally, have previous experience with FPGA boards. - Technical Ownership:
Demonstrated sense of ownership in mission-critical projects. Track record of end-to-end technical implementation.
- Experience with embedded systems or systems-level programming (ideally in C, C++, or Rust).
- Understanding of communication systems and networking concepts.
- Commercial Awareness:
Ability to balance engineering with cost considerations and partner requirements. Experience in strategic planning to minimize risks across technical and commercial domains.
- Communication:
Communication skills to liaise effectively with aerospace partners and articulate solutions to diverse stakeholders.
- Self-motivated & Adaptive:
Thrive in self-directed roles and rapidly adapt to shifting requirements and technological landscapes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working directly with satellite or space hardware/software projects.
- Background or interest in open source software development or commercialization.
- Interest in blockchain, crypto, aerospace innovation, and emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated leadership in forming successful technical partnerships within the space sector.
- Previous experience with FPGA boards.
- Remote role with flexibility, preference for candidates in US or Europe time zones. Comfortable working solo or as part of a diverse, globally distributed team.
- Genuine curiosity and a learning mindset in blockchain, crypto, aerospace, and open source movements.
