The challenge

At Rappi, we don't just write code — we build the infrastructure that supports millions of daily transactions across 9 LatAm countries. We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer Backend who wants to solve real-scale problems.

• Experience: 6+ years in similar roles
• Education: University degree completed; postgraduate desirable
• English: Intermediate-advanced
• Previous experience in tech startups, e-commerce, or marketplaces (desirable)
• Experience in agile squads and remote-first environments (desirable)

What you need to master

• Software Engineering
• Deep experience in at least one modern backend language: Go, Java/Kotlin, Node.js or Python.
• Ability to read, understand and contribute to systems developed in multiple languages.
• API and contract design: REST, gRPC, events and asynchronous APIs.
• Distributed Systems & Architecture
• Design and evolution of large-scale, high-availability distributed systems.
• Microservices architectures and event-driven architectures.
• Experience defining bounded contexts, service ownership and boundaries between domains.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs between microservices, modular monoliths and other architectures.
• Data Architecture
• SQL: PostgreSQL / MySQL.
• NoSQL: DynamoDB / MongoDB or other equivalent technologies.
• Redis and caching strategies.
• Data model design for high-volume systems.
• Replication, partitioning, indexes, query optimization and migration strategies.
• Integration patterns using event streaming / messaging (Kafka or equivalent).
• Cloud & Infrastructure
• AWS or equivalent cloud.
• Kubernetes and Docker.
• Infrastructure as Code.
• Design of highly available and scalable infrastructure.
• Knowledge of networking, load balancing, autoscaling and capacity planning.
• Reliability & Observability
• Design around SLA / SLO / SLI.
• Observability: metrics, logs, tracing and profiling.
• Design for resilience, graceful degradation and fault tolerance.
• Incident management and root cause analysis.
• Performance & Scalability
• Capacity planning.
• Load testing and performance testing.
• Identification and elimination of bottlenecks.
• Optimization of latency, throughput and resource utilization.
• Architectures capable of handling significant traffic growth without degradation.
• Engineering Platform & Delivery
• CI/CD.
• Git and branching/deployment strategies.
• Progressive delivery: canary releases, feature flags, blue/green deployments.
• Automated testing.
• Safe deployment and rollback strategies.
• Security
• Authentication / authorization.
• OAuth2 / OIDC / JWT.
• Secrets management.
• Security-by-design.
• Knowledge of common vulnerabilities and secure coding practices.
