Universal Quantum builds utility-scale quantum computers using a modular, practical architecture. Its trapped-ion systems tile many small quantum chips (iQPUs) with integrated classical control, link them with its UQConnect electric-field interconnect, and control qubits with UQLogic microwave technology, running at 70K rather than millikelvin temperatures. The company was founded by University of Sussex professors Sebastian Weidt (CEO) and Winfried Hensinger, who published the first practical blueprint for a large-scale trapped-ion quantum computer in 2017 and incorporated UQ the following year. Headquartered in Haywards Heath, UK, with a hub in Hamburg and sites in the US and Singapore, it counts the German Aerospace Center (DLR) among its clients. In October 2026 it raised over $100M in a Series A co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, the largest Series A ever raised by a UK-headquartered quantum company.

Products & media

iQPU

Universal Quantum's integrated Quantum Processing Unit, combining well-isolated trapped-ion qubits with classical control integrated directly at the chip layer as the module for million-qubit systems.

UQConnect

An electric-field link that transfers trapped-ion qubits directly between iQPU modules at world-record speed and fidelity, enabling modular, utility-scale quantum computers.

UQLogic

Ultra-efficient microwave control technology that executes single- and two-qubit gates on any chosen qubit with only a handful of gate fields, at any scale.
