Senior Software Engineer

Decisions that matter.
TL;DR
We are looking for a senior, hands-on software engineer to build and ship across the full stack of a production cybersecurity platform used by thousands of organizations.
You will own features end to end, from understanding the problem through technical specification, implementation, testing, and production operation. You will work closely with our Director of Engineering, lead, other engineers, and product team, reporting to the Director of Engineering.
This role is open to candidates in the Portland, Maine area or working remotely, with flexibility for hybrid arrangements.
The Role
Defendify makes cybersecurity possible for small and midsized organizations through an all-in-one platform and managed security services. We have been named to the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies three years running, and our platform spans 13 security modules across three protection layers, all delivered through a single product.
This is a generalist role on a lean, high-performing engineering team responsible for a sophisticated, multi-layered cybersecurity platform. You will work across backend services, frontend features, data pipelines, integrations, and infrastructure depending on what the work requires. We're an experienced, tight-knit team where collaboration is valued, ownership is paramount, and everyone has an opportunity to shape the product and the systems behind it.
The platform runs on a service architecture built primarily in Go and Node.js using technologies such as Express, NATS messaging, OpenTofu, Postgres, Valkey, Vue and more. You do not need extensive experience with every layer today, but you should be comfortable picking up new languages and systems quickly.
What You'll Own
- Architect, build, and ship features across our platform, with a focus on backend services, automation, and systems, while contributing across the stack as needed
- Build and maintain integrations with external services
- Design and deliver secure, well-tested, maintainable code, with the rigor and care expected of a cybersecurity platform
- Investigate and resolve production issues, participate in on-call support, and help strengthen monitoring and reliability
- Improve the systems you work in, whether that means better tests, cleaner interfaces, stronger observability, or simpler operations
- Participate in architectural decisions, code review, and planning
How We Build
We use AI tools as part of our daily engineering workflow to accelerate research, implementation, testing, and review. These tools are a real multiplier, but they do not replace engineering judgment. Knowing when to trust, verify, or override AI output is a key part of the job.
Architecture decisions are documented and deliberate. We run structured sprints, maintain a clean CI pipeline, and take production reliability seriously. Engineers here get to own the full lifecycle of their work, from infrastructure through testing and production operations.
What Success Looks Like
- You help protect the consistency and conceptual integrity of the platform as it continues to grow
- You consistently deliver secure, well-tested, maintainable software that performs reliably in production
- You pick up context quickly and contribute where the work is, not just where you are most comfortable
- Your code reviews improve quality, share knowledge, and strengthen the codebase
- You identify problems early and surface them clearly
- You navigate ambiguity, make sound technical decisions, and communicate tradeoffs clearly
You Might Be a Fit If You...
- Have 5+ years of professional, hands-on software engineering experience designing, building, shipping, and maintaining production software and systems
- Are strong in at least one of Go or Node.js and willing to work across both
- Have meaningful experience with relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL
- Are comfortable with infrastructure and operations, not just application code
- Communicate well in writing and think clearly about technical tradeoffs
- Approach security thoughtfully, especially if you have worked in a security-adjacent domain
- Use modern development tools, including AI-assisted workflows, as a natural part of how you work
How This Role Operates
You will spend most of your time writing code, reviewing code, and solving technical problems. You will also investigate production behavior, collaborate on architectural design, and improve how we operate.
We work in structured sprints with clear priorities, but the environment rewards flexibility. You will balance planned work with the real-time demands of a live platform, applying sound judgment to technical decisions, tradeoffs, and shifting priorities
You'll take an active role in defining effective solutions, not just implementing them. That means understanding the problems behind requirements, identifying gaps, challenging assumptions, and contributing ideas that improve the outcome. Your perspective will help influence both how we approach problems and what ultimately gets delivered.
Why This Role Matters
Defendify is expanding an established cybersecurity platform, accelerating how we address customer needs, and adding capabilities to strengthen the systems our customers rely on every day.
Every engineer that joins adds to what we can build, how fast we can ship, and how deeply we can invest in the quality and reliability of the product.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll have a meaningful role in shaping what's next, from delivering new customer-facing functionality to making sound technical decisions that support the platform's continued growth. Your work will have a direct impact on our customers, our product, and the future of Defendify.
Why Join Defendify
- A platform, not a feature: Work across 13 cybersecurity modules with multiple service layers and key integrations
- Real ownership: Your work ships to production and its impact is immediate
- A modern engineering environment: AI-augmented development workflows, infrastructure as code, structured architecture decisions, and a CI pipeline you can trust
- A proven growth company: Consistent year-over-year growth with the team and product to match
- A meaningful mission: Help make cybersecurity possible for small and midsized organizations facing growing security demands
Location
As a remote-first engineering team, we welcome candidates interested in working in-person, hybrid, or remotely, with a preference for U.S.-based candidates who can visit our Portland, Maine headquarters occasionally for collaboration and team activities.
Simple Test
Can you build production software across multiple languages and layers, and do your best work when you have real ownership over what you ship?
If yes, let's talk.
