Job Description
What is the opportunity?
This is an opportunity to contribute to building the reviewer experience for AI governance at enterprise scale. As Staff Engineer for AI Governance UI & Reviewer Experience, you'll help build the governance platform's frontend—a Next.js/React 19 microservice that sits in front of backend governance services and makes complex AI governance decisions understandable and actionable for human reviewers.
You'll contribute to building the UI that enables reviewers to make defensible governance decisions: presenting evidence clearly, surfacing risk classifications, routing escalations, and tracking remediation. You'll also help build automation that streamlines governance workflows, working alongside senior engineers to create seamless integrations with enterprise risk systems.
This is a hands-on Staff Engineer role where you'll implement production-grade React applications that serve as the human interface to RBC's AI governance plane. You'll work under the guidance of Principal Engineers to implement the technical vision for the governance UI and follow established standards and patterns.
You'll work on genuinely hard UX problems: how do you present assessment questions and LLM generated responses (and corresponding evals) so reviewers trust them? How do you implement escalation workflows that get the right decisions to the right authority? How do you make audit evidence legible to humans while maintaining traceability?
What will you do?
You will contribute to building the governance UI microservice:
Frontend Development (Hands-On)
- Implement features for the governance platform UI using Next.js 14+ / React 19
- Build components using the App Router architecture with server components and streaming
- Develop reviewer workflows using TypeScript, TanStack Query, and modern React patterns
- Implement BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) patterns to integrate with governance APIs
- Build components following established architecture, state management, and data fetching patterns
- Write and maintain Playwright + Jest test suites for UI reliability
- Implement frontend features with proper error boundaries, loading states, and accessibility
Risk Workflow Development & Automation
- Collaborate with risk specialists and senior engineers to understand governance processes and implement technical solutions
- Build automation features and intelligent agents to generate risk assessment artifacts (risk statements, control mappings, evidence packages, compliance reports)
- Implement integrations with risk book of records (Archer/Maverick) to push governance artifacts
- Implement browser automation using tools like Playwright for platforms without API connections
- Contribute to building the audit artifact repository within the governance platform
- Implement integrations between the governance platform and risk book of records following established patterns
- Contribute to integrating individual risk domain workflows into the overall governance layer
Reviewer Experience & Workflow Implementation
- Build reviewer workflows that enable humans to make good governance decisions quickly
- Implement interfaces that present eval evidence, risk classifications, and decision options clearly
- Build escalation screens that route high-consequence decisions to the right authority
- Implement remediation tracking interfaces that make governance outcomes visible and actionable
- Build evidence presentation layers that reduce cognitive load while maintaining completeness
- Contribute to building dashboards for monitoring governance operations, decision patterns, and system health
- Implement configuration UIs for governance policy, thresholds, and control registry management
API Integration & Backend Connectivity
- Integrate with backend governance services: decision engine, eval platform, evidence store, telemetry systems
- Consume APIs from agent platforms, control plane/gateway, and risk registries (Archer/Maverick)
- Implement event-driven updates and real-time data flows using modern React patterns
- Build error handling and fallback experiences when backend services are unavailable
- Implement caching strategies and optimistic updates for responsive user experience
Quality & Observability
- Write Playwright end-to-end tests and Jest unit tests
- Implement frontend observability: error tracking, performance monitoring, user analytics
- Build accessible interfaces that meet WCAG standards for enterprise compliance
- Use established design systems and component libraries for governance UI consistency
What do you need to succeed?
Must Have:
- 5+ years of software development experience with strong frontend engineering expertise and hands-on coding ability
- Proficiency in React, Next.js (App Router), and TypeScript
- Production experience with TanStack Query (or React Query) and modern React state management
- Experience implementing BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) patterns and API integration
- Experience with Playwright and Jest for frontend testing
- Ability to build user workflows for decision-making environments
- Experience building features that integrate with enterprise systems
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and implement technical solutions
- Familiarity with automation tools (e.g., Playwright) for systems integration
- Experience implementing frontend applications based on governance, compliance, or operational requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field
Nice-to-have
- Experience building governance, compliance, risk management, or model monitoring interfaces
- Familiarity with Archer, Maverick, or similar GRC platforms
- Knowledge of audit and compliance artifact management in regulated environments
- Experience building automation or agent-based workflows for document generation
- Understanding of risk book of records concepts and governance artifact lifecycle management
- Knowledge of AI/ML systems and familiarity with model evaluation, risk classification, or governance workflows
- Understanding of regulatory frameworks (NIST AI RMF, OSFI, CIRO)
- Experience with component libraries (Radix, shadcn/ui, MUI) and design systems
- Familiarity with frontend observability tools (Sentry, Datadog RUM, LogRocket)
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and experience building WCAG-compliant UIs
- Familiarity with data visualization libraries (D3.js, Recharts, Plotly)
- Understanding of human factors engineering and decision support system design
- Familiarity with RBC's technology landscape including Lumina platform, Assist Pro, Agent Control Plane, or LLM Gateway
- Experience working in regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, or government)
- Advanced degree in Computer Science or related discipline
What’s in it for you?
- A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses, flexible benefits, competitive compensation, and stock where applicable
- Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities to build expertise in AI governance operations
- Ability to make a lasting impact by designing the operational workflows that make AI governance decisions effective, efficient, and defensible
- Work in a dynamic, collaborative, high-performing team at the forefront of AI governance and risk management in financial services
- Flexible work/life balance options that support your professional and personal priorities
- Opportunities to take on challenging, strategic operational work that bridges governance policy, technical evaluation, and human decision-making
- Access to cutting-edge governance systems and opportunities for continuous learning in emerging AI risk management practices
