About the Golden Gate Institute for AI
We call ourselves a new kind of think tank because we’re not here to push predetermined policy outcomes. Our mission is to enable better thinking – across labs, government, economics, civil society, and academia – by giving these groups the context they need to understand one another. Our work centers on three functions:
Put the right people in the same room. We bring people together across sectors for curated conversations where shared understanding is needed most.Show what the debate is actually about. We publish work which unpacks the key debates, surfacing definitions, assumptions, and fault lines so that disagreements become comprehensible. Make AI legible for the people in charge. We write clearly, without jargon or ideology, so leaders can act with better information. The response has been phenomenal. Our annual conference, The Curve, is one of the preeminent gatherings of leaders, builders, and thinkers in the field. We’re running an increasing number of highly successful smaller events. Our blog, Second Thoughts, is well-respected with a rapidly growing audience.
“I spent a few days at The Curve and I am humbled and overjoyed by the experience – it is a special event, …and I hope they preserve whatever lightning they've managed to capture in this particular bottle.” – Jack Clark, Head of the Anthropic Institute
Golden Gate is led by Steve Newman, creator of Google Docs and a serial entrepreneur with multiple successful exits, and Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, a longtime leader in technology for democracy and social good. Together, they bring decades of experience turning ideas into products, companies, and movements, and a shared commitment to shaping the trajectory of AI for humanity’s benefit.
Now we're aiming to scale from our small founding team to 10+ staff by the end of 2026. With more capacity, we’re aiming to grow our audience, produce ambitious, collaborative research, and facilitate more high-quality, cross-cutting conversations among key players in AI.
