About the role
Construction Superintendent - Civil (Canal Flats)
Are you Ready to Build the Future of AI Infrastructure? If you’re energized by massive scale, deep technical complexity, and the opportunity to shape the next era of compute, this is your moment. Join a team where groundbreaking work meets competitive compensation, meaningful impact, and a chance to accelerate your career at the forefront of AI innovation. We want to meet you.
Why IREN?
IREN is a vertically integrated AI Cloud provider, delivering large-scale data centers and GPU clusters for AI training and inference. IREN’s platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and power in renewable-rich regions across North America, Europe and APAC.
With 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way: responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.
This position is based on-site in Canal Flats, BC, supporting the construction of a 30 MW liquid-cooled AI data center campus. It is a camp-based role working a 14 days on / 7 days off (14&7) rotation in support of the project’s 24-hour, two-crew (A/B) construction schedule. Camp accommodations, meals, and site transportation are provided during on-rotation periods.
The Role
The Construction Superintendent – Civil owns all civil construction activities on a greenfield 30 MW liquid-cooled AI data center campus. Our facilities are, at their core, power and cooling projects with a building around them, and this role leads everything that goes in the ground and under the slab: earthworks, foundations and equipment pads, underground utilities and duct banks, structural concrete, and site logistics. You’ll ensure civil scopes are installed, tested, and turned over to meet project requirements, industry standards, and the sequencing demands of the electrical and mechanical trades that follow you. Reporting to the Construction Manager, you’ll direct civil General Foremen across day and night crews and collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and third-party testing agencies to drive quality, safety, and efficiency across the project lifecycle.
What You'll Do
- Project Oversight: Manage the planning, execution, and delivery of all civil construction activities: sitework, grading, access roads, foundations and equipment pads, underground utilities and duct banks, structural concrete, erosion and sediment control, drainage, and site logistics.
- Technical Leadership: Review and interpret civil and structural drawings, grading plans, geotechnical reports, specifications, and submittals to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry best practices.
- Trade Supervision: Directly lead earthworks, concrete, formwork, and utility crews through your General Foremen, enforcing schedule, quality, and safety day-to-day on site across both crews.
- Coordination: Interface with the Electrical and Mechanical Superintendents to resolve interface and sequencing conflicts, particularly around underground utility tie-ins, duct banks, grounding, and equipment pads.
- Vendor & Contractor Management: Supervise and coordinate subcontractors, aggregate and concrete suppliers, and equipment vendors, ensuring timely delivery and quality installation.
- Testing & Turnover: Oversee compaction, concrete, and geotechnical testing with third-party QA/QC and survey resources; ensure testing documentation, as-builts, and survey records are complete and submitted on time.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all civil work adheres to CSA A23.1/A23.2, geotechnical specifications, WorkSafeBC requirements, and internal safety and quality standards. Own the site safety record for your scope.
- Scheduling & Budget Control: Track progress and manage schedules to ensure civil milestones are achieved within budget and timeline, keeping the critical path clear for following trades.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks related to weather windows, ground conditions, concrete placement in cold climate, and underground conflicts.
- Stakeholder Communication: Provide clear daily and weekly updates to project leadership on progress, manpower, challenges, and solutions.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of experience in civil construction management on heavy industrial or mission-critical projects (data centers, LNG, power generation, mining, petrochemical, or similar), including at least 3 years in a superintendent or senior field leadership role.
- Proven track record managing large-scale civil scopes (earthworks, foundations, underground utilities, structural concrete) with direct site authority over multi-trade crews.
- Strong understanding of concrete placement and curing in cold climates, compaction and geotechnical requirements, and underground utility and duct bank installation.
- Hands-on experience with civil testing and turnover: compaction and concrete testing, survey verification, and as-built documentation.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (CSA A23.1/A23.2, BC Building Code, WorkSafeBC).
- Red Seal trade certification (Heavy Equipment Operator, Carpenter, or related), Civil Engineering Technologist diploma, engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple contractors and align them to project goals.
- Ability to work on-site in Canal Flats, BC on a 14&7 camp rotation, including night shift coverage as the project ramps; camp/remote-site experience an asset.
- Preferred Experience
- Prior experience in data center construction, or comparable projects with dense underground electrical infrastructure (duct banks, grounding grids).
- Concrete testing/inspection certification (e.g., ACI) or equivalent.
- Experience with structured completions platforms and turnover of tagged systems.
- PMP certification or Gold Seal designation an asset.
