About the role

At Podero, we’re building the future of energy consumption – combining the power of smart software with everyday devices to transform how people consume energy. Our mission is bold: turn homes and their devices into the most powerful tool for reducing CO₂ and electricity costs. We’re early and moving fast. We’re backed by leading investors like Planet A and Systemiq Capital and already working with major energy providers like E.ON and Total Energies.

If you’re excited about shaping a company from the ground up and solving real-world problems with cutting-edge technology, Podero is the place to do it. Join us to build a company that’s lean by design, technically deep, and obsessed with solving the energy transition’s hardest problems.

Role Overview

As a Senior Engineer at Podero, you will help shape and build the architecture of our platform, the backbone that enables us to orchestrate thousands of devices today and millions in the future. You’ll build the systems that make Podero reliable, traceable and scalable.

You’ll work end-to-end across backend services, APIs, and integrations with hardware and control systems. You collaborate closely with Product to understand real-world constraints and make sure the platform evolves in a way that drives user value and commercial outcomes. You’ll break complex problems into small, iterative steps and ship quickly, validating impact along the way.

This is a role for someone who loves building platforms, enjoys solving hard engineering problems, and wants to help us get ahead of the scaling challenges we’ll face in the next 6 to 12 months.

What You Will Do

As part of your role at Podero, your responsibilities will include:

  • Own engineering projects end-to-end, from technical approach to deployment, operation, and iteration.

  • Help design and evolve Podero's platform architecture so it can scale to millions of connected devices with high reliability and observability.

  • Build core backend systems that handle real-time orchestration, telemetry processing, scheduling, and integration logic.

  • Develop and integrate external APIs from energy hardware, IoT devices, and control systems into a unified orchestration layer.

  • Improve platform reliability through better tracing, monitoring, failover strategies, and performance optimizations.

  • Contribute to product direction by working closely with Product to connect commercial goals, user needs, and technical feasibility.

  • Break large problems into small, testable, iterative pieces, shipping value continuously.

  • Collaborate with customers when needed to understand real workflows and ensure what we build matches the complexity of the energy domain.

  • Uphold engineering excellence by taking part in design reviews, doing code reviews, and sharing best practices across the team.

  • Turn solutions into platform capabilities that other engineers can build on.

What You Bring

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience, including 1–2 years operating at a Senior or Staff level with end-to-end ownership of major systems or projects.

  • Proven experience designing and operating complex, reliable, production-grade platforms that run at scale.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals with deep experience in distributed systems, reliability, scalability, and observability.

  • Experience building external API integrations, ideally with hardware systems, control logic, or IoT ecosystems, and an understanding of how physical devices behave in practice.

  • Comfort working with high autonomy in fast-moving startup environments where speed, ownership, and clarity matter.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with Product, Engineering, and customers to shape technical decisions.

  • Curiosity for the energy domain, the transition to flexible consumption, and the challenges of orchestrating real-world devices in reliable and scalable ways.

  • Familiarity with modern backend ecosystems; our stack includes Python, Rust, event-driven systems, and cloud platforms (GCP).

Why Join Us

  • Work on a mission that matters by building the foundational systems that will reshape how millions of people consume energy and reduce global CO₂ emissions.

  • High ownership, high autonomy - no politics, no unnecessary process, just builders shipping fast.

  • A rare opportunity to shape the technical DNA of a company from the beginning and influence long-term architectural decisions.

  • Report directly to the board, giving your work immediate visibility at the highest level and creating meaningful opportunities for long-term career growth as Podero scales.

  • Join a tight-knit, ambitious team backed by world-class investors.

  • Competitive compensation, including stock options, flexible work arrangements, and strong professional growth opportunities.

  • Work Flexibility: Remote or hybrid work options with the ability to work in our Vienna office.

  • 25 Days of Annual Leave

  • Off-sites and travel budget: Regular Team Events and exciting off-site experiences all across Europe. Travel budgets for customer visits, conferences, and industry events.
