Job Description:

Principal R&D Hardware Design Engineer (Power) - Next-Generation Networking

Engineer power at scale. Optimize every rail. Enable reliable networks worldwide.

At Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Principal Engineers are not just senior contributors. They are technical leaders who shape platforms, influence strategy, and raise the engineering bar across the organization. This role is designed for engineers whose power architecture and circuit decisions extend beyond a single design and whose impact is measured across products, teams, and technology generations.

If you are a power design expert who thrives on complex system challenges, leads through technical influence, and wants your work deployed globally at scale, this role offers both scope and impact.

HPE is a global technology leader built on innovation, trust, and engineering excellence. We empower Principal Engineers with broad ownership, autonomy, and the authority to drive complex technical decisions while collaborating with experienced engineering talent across disciplines.

Why HPE Networking?

HPE Networking is a strategic growth engine for the company, delivering open, standards-based solutions across Branch, Campus, and Data Center environments worldwide. Our platforms serve customers from growing enterprises to the world’s largest hyperscalers.

As a Principal Engineer focused on power, your work will shape power architectures, influence long-term technology roadmaps, and directly impact efficiency, performance, reliability, scalability, and cost across multiple product lines.

We are seeking a Principal R&D Hardware Design Engineer (Power) to join our hardware design organization, working on advanced networking systems where power conversion, power distribution, power integrity, thermal constraints, and system-level trade-offs are business-critical.

This role is for engineers who want to lead technically, mentor broadly, and see their power architecture and circuit designs shipped at global scale.

HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT

As a Principal R&D Hardware Design Engineer (Power), you will act as a technical authority for power architecture, power circuit design, and board-level power distribution, influencing designs well beyond your immediate deliverables.

You will:

• Define and own power architecture and power distribution strategies for complex, high-performance networking platforms across multiple product generations.
• Design and optimize AC-DC and DC-DC power solutions, including voltage regulators, multiphase converters, hot-swap circuits, protection circuits, sequencing, monitoring, and control.
• Translate system requirements, load profiles, transient behavior, thermal limits, reliability targets, and cost constraints into robust power designs with appropriate margin.
• Drive component selection and design trade-offs across efficiency, density, transient response, noise, thermal performance, reliability, availability, manufacturability, and cost.
• Partner with system architects, board designers, signal and power integrity engineers, mechanical and thermal teams, firmware, validation, manufacturing, suppliers, and program leadership across global sites.
• Lead power design reviews, simulation, schematic development, bring-up, characterization, compliance testing, and complex root-cause investigations from concept through production.
• Establish power design standards, reference circuits, modeling practices, derating guidelines, and reusable solutions that improve quality and execution across programs.
• Mentor senior engineers, guide technical decision-making, and raise power design capability across the organization.

Why This Role Stands Out

• Principal-level ownership of power architecture and power circuit design for high-performance networking hardware
• Opportunity to influence platform power strategy, power density, efficiency, reliability, and product scalability
• Work on advanced networking products deployed globally across Branch, Campus, and Data Center environments
• Collaboration with experienced engineers, system architects, silicon partners, and power technology suppliers across global R&D organizations
• Strong culture of technical rigor, hands-on engineering, mentorship, and sustained innovation

About You

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• 10+ years of experience designing power circuits and power distribution systems for complex electronic products or hardware platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to define power architecture and make system-level trade-offs involving efficiency, density, transient response, thermal performance, reliability, and cost.
• Proven track record of solving ambiguous, high-impact power design, bring-up, validation, and field issues.
• Recognized technical leader who influences power design direction beyond a single team or project.
• Deep expertise in power conversion and distribution, including DC-DC converters, multiphase regulators, hot-swap and protection circuits, sequencing, telemetry, and board-level power delivery.
• Extensive hands-on experience with power simulation, measurement, validation, and characterization, including efficiency, stability, ripple, noise, transient response, thermal performance, and fault behavior.
• Advanced schematic and board-level design experience using Cadence OrCAD and Allegro, with strong understanding of PCB layout practices for high-current and noise-sensitive power circuits.

Additional Preferred Abilities

• Ability to operate independently at a Principal level, making high-impact technical decisions with minimal oversight.
• Strong cross-organizational influence and relationship-building skills, including effective collaboration with silicon vendors, power suppliers, and manufacturing partners.
• Exceptional communication skills, able to articulate power architecture, defend technical trade-offs, and influence senior engineering and management stakeholders.
• Self-motivated, strategic thinker with strong listening and mentoring capabilities, and a commitment to improving power design standards, methods, and reusable solutions.
