Manufacturing Engineer, Machining
Austin · Posted 4D AGO
Manufacturing Engineers at Galadyne take flight hardware from drawing to a process that can be repeated in Austin. This role owns what we should make here — machine and print — on what platforms, and with what equipment, then stands that capability up and proves it on real parts. You will start from the current product BOM and design intent, not from a pre-selected machine list. You will research subtractive and metal additive processes, benchmark machine tools, LPBF/DMLS platforms, and contract shops, propose a cell, specify and introduce the equipment, and deliver the first printed and machined parts. The work is hands-on: design reviews, vendor test cuts and sample builds, install and buy-off on the floor, and first-article at the CMM. You work daily with Design, Production, and equipment builders. Safety, dimensional intent, and time-to-first-good-part are hard constraints.
Responsibilities
- Tear down the current BOM and drawing package part by part with a bias to bring as much machining and metal additive in-house as the product and a first cell can support. Classify each item as print here, machine here, print-then-machine here, redesign so it can be made here, or buy only when in-house is not capable, not cost-effective, or not the right first-wave part. Build a sequenced pull-in list so vendor content shrinks over time.
- Propose the process set the product actually needs — mill, turn, mill-turn, multi-axis, grind, EDM, metal powder-bed fusion, and post-print machining — based on geometry, material, tolerance, rate, and cost. Build the recommendation from the hardware; do not inherit a machine list.
- Write the equipment justification for both CNC and metal AM: work envelope, axis / laser configuration, accuracy, probing, tooling and powder handling, workholding, utilities, inert gas and powder safety, staffing, lead time, total installed cost, and make-vs-buy payback. Present options and a recommended baseline to leadership. Landing a production-capable metal AM machine is part of this role.
- Own RFQs, technical down-select, test cuts, sample builds, capability studies, and vendor buy-off for machine tools and metal AM systems, and for bridge production while the cell is coming up.
- Lead layout, utilities, rigging, install, commissioning, and ramp with OEMs and Production so the cell comes up in the shortest time and at the lowest cost without sacrificing capability. Include powder-safe and post-process flow for printed metal.
- Develop workholding, fixtures, build strategy, and cutting strategy so printed and machined parts hold datum and GD&T. Modify jaws and fixtures on the floor; close locating issues with Design.
- Give Design DFM feedback: datum schemes, setup count, tool access, support and powder-removal strategy, wall thickness, hole and thread standards, stock allowance, and what should be printed, machined from stock, or bought as a blank.
- Program or direct CAM and AM build prep for first parts; own tool libraries, parameters, probing routines, and in-process checks. Hand off stable processes to production with clear work instructions.
- Create the launch packet for in-house parts: process flow, PFMEA, control plan, work instructions, inspection standards, and first-article plan.
- Own dimensional control through pilot and ramp: in-process probing, CMM / scan loops, fixture adjustment, and dimensional reviews with Design.
- Error-proof the process where it pays: poka-yoke, red-rabbit parts, tool-break detection, and training for production and maintenance.
- Drive rate and quality after first parts: cycle time, scrap, rework, OEE, and a sequenced list of the next part numbers to pull in-house.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years introducing machining and/or metal additive processes and equipment into production — not only running an existing shop. You have specified or commissioned CNC and/or metal AM equipment and lived with it after install.
- Proven make/buy and routing work: you have walked a BOM, tagged parts to print / mill / turn / multi-axis / buy, and moved hardware from vendor to in-house with evidence.
- Depth in CNC milling and turning; fluency in multi-axis workholding and CAM. Working knowledge of metal LPBF/DMLS — supports, parameters, heat-treat handoff, powder safety, and post-machining printed metal — sufficient to specify, install, and release a machine.
- Enough familiarity with adjacent processes (grind, EDM, hard milling) to specify a cell and not get sold the wrong machine.
- Hands-on with fixtures, soft jaws, tombstones, and shop-floor debug. Comfortable indicating, shimming, walking a cell with Production, and changing the process when the first parts miss print.
- Strong GD&T: you can take a datum scheme from the drawing to the fixture to probe / CMM results and close the loop during pilot and ramp.
- Working command of BOMs, DFM, process design and validation, PFMEA, control plans, work instructions, feeds and speeds, tool life, and cost.
- CAM fluency (Mastercam, NX, Fusion, or equivalent) and experience with common controls (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or equivalent). AM build-prep software fluency is a plus. SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, or equivalent for fixture and process review.
This is a zero-to-one role with real technical ownership and meaningful purpose. Join us in rebuilding missile systems for real production scale.
