Underwriting Support Assistant
Professional & Management Risks (PMR)

Leeds | Hybrid Working (3 Days Office / 2 Days Home)
12-Month Fixed-Term Contract | Salary + 5% Completion Bonus

Looking for a role where you can build a career, not just do a job?

If you're organised, confident speaking to people and love working in a fast-moving environment, this could be the perfect opportunity to launch your career in insurance underwriting.

We're looking for an Underwriting Support Assistant to join our Professional & Management Risks (PMR) Renewals team in Leeds. Whether you're currently working in customer service, a contact centre, sales support, administration, hospitality or financial services, this role offers a genuine opportunity to develop specialist skills and build a long-term career with a global insurance business. Based on insights from the role briefing and current advert, previous insurance experience is not essential as training will be provided.

Working alongside experienced underwriters, you'll play a vital role in helping us retain and grow a £40m+ portfolio spanning Professional Indemnity, Cyber and Management Liability insurance.

Why This Role Stands Out:

This isn't a traditional administration role.

You'll become the heartbeat of the underwriting team, helping to build broker relationships, progress renewals, secure business opportunities and deliver the outstanding service that makes Markel different.

You'll spend time speaking with brokers, chasing opportunities, supporting underwriters and managing your own workload, making every day varied, fast-paced and rewarding.

Most importantly, you'll join a team led by a manager who is passionate about developing talent. Having progressed through the business himself, he is a strong advocate of helping ambitious individuals build successful underwriting careers.

What You'll Be Doing:

·       Managing inbound broker enquiries and providing outstanding service.

·       Making proactive outbound calls to brokers to progress and retain business.

·       Chasing quotations, renewal terms and outstanding information.

·       Supporting underwriters with policy administration and workflow management.

·       Updating systems and maintaining accurate records.

·       Managing your own portfolio of renewal activity and priorities.

·       Building strong relationships with brokers and internal stakeholders.

·       Supporting retention and growth by helping convert opportunities into business.

·       Ensuring cases are progressed efficiently and service standards are met.

What We're Looking For:

We're far more interested in your attitude, communication skills and potential than whether you've worked in insurance before.

You'll be successful in this role if you are:

·       Comfortable speaking with people over the phone.

·       Organised and able to manage multiple priorities.

·       Proactive and willing to take ownership.

·       Customer-focused and service-driven.

·       Resilient in a busy, high-volume environment.

·       Confident using Microsoft 365 and learning new systems.

·       Motivated to learn and develop professionally.

·       Able to build positive relationships with customers and colleagues.

We'd Love to Hear From You If You Have Experience In:

·       Customer service

·       Contact centres

·       Sales support

·       Banking or financial services

·       Insurance administration

·       Estate agency or property services

·       Retail leadership

·       Hospitality

·       Professional administration roles

Insurance experience is beneficial, but absolutely not essential. If you can demonstrate strong communication, organisation and customer service skills, we want to hear from you.

Your Career Path at Markel:

This role is an excellent entry point into the insurance industry and provides exposure to experienced underwriters, specialist insurance products and commercial decision-making.

Typical progression could include:

Underwriting Support Assistant → Assistant Underwriter → Underwriter → Senior Underwriter → Team Leader / Manager

While this role is initially a 12-month FTC, Markel has a strong track record of converting successful fixed-term employees into permanent opportunities as business needs evolve.

Why Join Markel?
