Description
Job Type: Full Time | Location: Dallas/Fort Worth | Department: Engineering | Reporting to: Senior Manager, Asset Management & Governance | Work Location Type: #hybrid#remoteIREN is a vertically integrated AI Cloud provider, delivering large-scale data centers and GPU clusters for AI training and inference. IREN’s platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and power in renewable-rich regions across North America, Europe and APAC.
The Reliability Engineer – Electrical Systems will be the pillar's technical authority for the reliability of IREN's data center electrical infrastructure from utility and high-voltage intake through medium- and low-voltage distribution to the critical load — substations, transformers, switchgear, generators, ATS/STS, UPS, PDU/RPP and busway, protection and controls. The role develops and maintains the enterprise electrical maintenance and testing strategies, ensures every maintenance plan meets IEEE, NFPA, NETA and applicable standards, owns the electrical switching, testing and procedure standards the sites execute, and leads root-cause investigations into electrical failures. It is a hands-on support role to the site teams: reviewing and witnessing switching and testing, supporting incidents, approving fit-for-purpose deviations proposed by campus Asset Managers, and mentoring site engineers and techniciansWith 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way – responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, CMRP, CRE or NETA/ETT Level III–IV certification is an asset.
- 7+ years in electrical reliability, maintenance engineering or critical-facilities electrical operations, with demonstrable data center experience across HV, MV and LV systems.
- Deep working knowledge of data center electrical architecture and procedures: utility intake and substations, MV/LV switchgear, transformers, generators and paralleling, ATS/STS, UPS and battery systems, PDU/RPP/busway, protection, grounding and EPMS; N+1 / 2N topologies, maintenance bypass and concurrent maintainability.
- Experience developing and executing switching orders, MOPs/EOPs and energized/de-energized work controls; competent in LOTO and electrical safety under NFPA 70E and OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S.
- Experience with electrical acceptance and maintenance testing to ANSI/NETA ATS and MTS: insulation resistance, power factor/tan delta, transformer DGA and TTR, breaker primary/secondary injection and trip testing, protection-relay coordination, VLF cable testing, battery impedance and capacity testing, infrared thermography and ultrasound.
- Proven root-cause analysis capability using structured methods (5-Whys, Ishikawa/fishbone, fault tree analysis, event and causal factor charting, Apollo or TapRooT, Kepner-Tregoe, FMEA/FMECA) with the discipline to distinguish failure symptom, mode, mechanism and root cause.
- Working command of the governing standards: NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70B (Electrical Equipment Maintenance), NFPA 70E, NFPA 110/111; IEEE 3007.2, IEEE 493 (Gold Book), IEEE 1584 (arc flash), IEEE C37 and C57 series, IEEE 450/1188/1106 (batteries); ANSI/NETA ATS, MTS and ETT; Uptime Institute Tier and TIA-942 practices; ISO 55001.
- Familiarity with reliability analytics — MTBF/MTTR, Weibull, Pareto and bad-actor analysis, P-F interval and condition-based strategy design — and with CMMS data (e.g., Fiix, Maximo, SAP PM) and EPMS/power-quality systems.
- Clear, measured communicator able to work with technicians, site engineers, OEMs, NETA firms and executives; willing to travel to campuses and support incidents outside normal hours when required
- Pre-employment screening, including background check and substance testing may be required according to company policies.
- Must provide own steel-toed work boots; other PPE will be supplied.
- Must be able to reliably commute to the work site daily or have plans to relocate before starting work.
- Regular travel to the Childress campus and other IREN sites is required; availability to support electrical incidents outside normal hours as needed.
Responsibilities
- Electrical Maintenance Strategy — develop, maintain and approve the enterprise maintenance and testing strategies for HV, MV and LV electrical assets (task selection, frequencies and test standards) with a documented technical basis; ensure every electrical maintenance plan meets IEEE, NFPA, NETA and other applicable standards and OEM requirements; set the criticality-driven testing regime (acceptance, routine, condition-based) that the campuses execute.
- Switching, Testing & Procedures — own the electrical switching, isolation and testing standards; develop, review and approve switching orders, MOPs, EOPs and energized-work controls; witness high-consequence switching, transfers, load-bank and integrated systems tests; assure protection-relay settings and coordination studies, arc-flash studies and single-line/one-line currency are maintained and reflected in procedures.
- Standards Compliance & Assurance — act as the pillar's authority on electrical codes and standards; review site programs for conformance to NFPA 70B/70E, IEEE and NETA; support audits, regulator and customer evidence requests; maintain the electrical testing and inspection records framework.
- Root-Cause Analysis & Defect Elimination — lead RCA investigations into electrical failures and near-misses using structured methods (5-Whys, Ishikawa, fault tree, event and causal factor analysis, Apollo/TapRooT, Kepner-Tregoe); distinguish symptom, failure mode, mechanism, contributing factors and root cause; define corrective and preventive actions and verify closure; run bad-actor analysis and determine fleet applicability — issuing technical advisories, fleet inspections, strategy or spares changes and OEM engagement where a condition may exist elsewhere.
- Reliability Engineering — apply RCM, FMEA/FMECA and reliability analytics (MTBF/MTTR, availability, Weibull, P-F intervals) to electrical systems; design condition-monitoring programs (thermography, ultrasound/partial discharge, DGA, battery monitoring, power quality) that produce actionable maintenance decisions; evaluate redundancy, single points of failure and common-mode risks across the electrical topology.
- Site Team Support — provide day-to-day technical support to campus Asset Managers, Planning & Scheduling and Operations: review fit-for-purpose deviation requests to enterprise strategies, support incident response and recovery, advise on energized-work decisions, witness commissioning and acceptance testing, and feed campus execution results and bad actors back into the enterprise strategy.
- Change & Lifecycle — review electrical change requests through the CAB for reliability and standards impact; provide reliability input to specifications, acquisition, commissioning/IST and handover; support lifecycle, obsolescence and critical-spares decisions for electrical assets.
- Capability & Governance — mentor site electrical engineers and technicians; contribute to competency standards, training and procedure quality; maintain the electrical reliability KPIs and report performance, risk and required actions to the pillar and site leadership.
