About the role
About the Team We build Bloomberg Platform as a Service (BPaaS), a multi-tenant application platform built on Kubernetes. BPaaS is the default deployment path for many teams at Bloomberg and accounts for a substantial share of the firm's compute infrastructure. By bringing deployment, networking, security, and observability together with Bloomberg's internal tooling, we let engineers focus on their applications rather than the infrastructure behind them.
We are expanding BPaaS engineering to Pune with a new team focused on the core systems that deploy applications and connect them to Bloomberg's infrastructure.
The team will build and evolve the software that takes application artifacts and turns them into running, reachable services on BPaaS. This includes the systems responsible for application deployment, cluster orchestration, ingress and traffic management, and the infrastructure capabilities that connect workloads to the rest of Bloomberg's environment.
The work sits directly in the critical path between an engineer submitting an application and that application running successfully in production. As BPaaS grows across more workloads, clusters, and environments, the team will focus on making this path reliable, scalable, automated, and increasingly independent of the underlying infrastructure.
This is a new team with the opportunity to establish significant technical ownership while working closely with BPaaS teams in San Francisco, New York, and London. Our goal is for each BPaaS team to be an independent engine of development with a clear mission while collectively owning the platform.
What's in it for you?
Build software on Bloomberg's application deployment path.
Work on Kubernetes, deployment, ingress, networking, and orchestration.
Solve distributed systems problems across a large Kubernetes environment.
Help establish and shape a new BPaaS engineering team in Pune.
Turn real platform challenges into reusable capabilities.
We'll trust you to:
Develop systems that translate application and deployment intent into running Kubernetes workloads and make those applications reliably reachable through ingress and traffic management.
Develop automation and orchestration for managing BPaaS across a large fleet of Kubernetes clusters.
Own projects from design and implementation through testing, rollout, and production operation.
Diagnose complex production issues spanning application deployment, Kubernetes, networking, ingress, and infrastructure dependencies.
Improve the reliability, observability, scalability, and operational maturity of the application deployment path.
Reduce dependencies on individual clusters and environments as BPaaS evolves toward increasingly cluster-agnostic platform capabilities.
Partner with application teams to understand deployment and adoption challenges and turn recurring problems into platform improvements.
Collaborate with BPaaS teams in San Francisco, New York, and London on architecture and capabilities that span the platform.
Evaluate new technologies, challenge existing designs, and help shape the future direction of BPaaS.
You'll need to have:
Strong software engineering skills and experience developing production systems in an object-oriented or strongly typed programming language.
Experience with Kubernetes and/or containerized production environments.
An understanding of distributed systems and the challenges involved in operating reliable services at scale.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across application and infrastructure boundaries.
The ability to work effectively across teams and turn loosely defined infrastructure problems into well-designed engineering solutions.
An interest in learning unfamiliar systems and developing expertise across multiple layers of a platform.
We'd love to see:
Experience building or operating multi-tenant Kubernetes platforms.
Experience with Golang and JavaScript/TypeScript.
Experience with Kubernetes controllers, operators, or custom resources.
Familiarity with Kubernetes networking, ingress, or service mesh technologies such as Istio.
Experience building deployment, orchestration, or workload lifecycle systems.
- Experience with fleet management or coordinating changes across multiple Kubernetes clusters.
