Research Fellow (Oceanography / Sediment Dynamics / Ocean Engineering / Environmental Engineering)
Singapore · Full time · Posted 1H AGO
The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University Singapore that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. For more details, please view https://earthobservatory.sg/
The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) invite applications for the position of Research Fellow.
The Research Fellow will join a new project awarded by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) and Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute Singapore (CFI) collecting data from the Johor Strait to better protect Singapore’s coastline amidst climate change. This is an international, multi-institutional and trans-disciplinary program involving top researchers from the local and international community that aims to understand sediment budgets and source-to-sink relationships. Understanding the relationship between local climate drivers, coastal processes and sediment dynamics will allow for improved predictions of coastal change under the variety of climate scenarios in the coming decades.
The work will involve developing and applying hydrodynamic and sediment transport models, conducting field measurements, quantifying erosion and deposition processes, predicting sediment pathways and budgets, and integrating multidisciplinary environmental datasets. Active participation in research will be encouraged, and support for publication and meeting/conference presentations can be available.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop hydrodynamic and sediment transport models for fluvial-marine systems, including river channels, intertidal mangrove and mudflat areas and adjacent subtidal environments.
- Conduct and analyse field measurements of flow conditions, turbulence, seabed and water sedimentology and related environmental parameters in Singapore’s coastal and marine environments.
- Quantify relationships between hydrodynamic intensity and sediment erosion/flux/deposition patterns using field measurements and modelling data.
- Support the development of physics-based models to predict sediment source-to-sink pathways and spatial variations in sediment erosion and accretion rates and capacities (sediment budget) in fluvial to shallow marine environments.
- Integrate hydrodynamic/sediment transport modelling outputs with sedimentology, geochemistry, and other relevant datasets (eg satellite images) generated by the broader CFI project team.
- Prepare technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and project deliverables.
- Maintain efficient data collection to ensure accuracy and completeness of data and preparation of the Data Management Plan for annual submission
- Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator
Job Requirements:
- Possess a PhD in Oceanography, Sediment Dynamics, Ocean Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline in geosciences.
- Strong background in hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling.
- Experience with fluvial, estuarine, mangrove, intertidal and shallow marine field measurements is highly desirable.
- Experience with numerical modelling tools such as Delft3D, SWAT, or equivalent hydrodynamic / sediment transport models will be advantageous.
- Experience with field instrumentation such as ADCPs, current meters, turbidity sensors, sediment traps, or related coastal-marine monitoring equipment will be advantageous.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar programming / data-analysis tools. Further ability to use AI/Machine Learning methodologies for data-analysis, predictions etc will be highly advantageous.
- Strong publication record and ability to work independently.
- A team player in a project setting, also with ability to work independently in a multi-cultural team environment
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Interested applicants are invited to submit a full CV.
EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status, family responsibilities, or disability.
We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
