Happen Bank (formerly LendingClub) is built around a simple purpose: to clear the way to help people turn intention into action, and action into financial progress. That means offering focused products, a frictionless mobile-first experience, and clear terms with no gotchas. Respect and fairness is part of our DNA, and that ideal shapes how we work, how we treat each other, and how we invest in our employees and our community. Join us in using data, bold thinking, and a commitment to innovation to help clear the way for millions of Americans to achieve more.
About the Role
Happen Bank is looking for a Lead Quality Engineer to be the technical lead for quality engineering across the teams that build the consumer experience for our members on mobile and web. You will work with a group of QA engineers, including onshore, nearshore, and offshore partners, embedded across those product engineering teams. Together they stand behind everything our members touch: the web and mobile experience, the APIs that power it, and the performance that makes it feel effortless. This is a deeply hands-on role. You will set the technical direction for regression, automation frameworks, and test data, and then get into the work yourself: building, debugging, and leading by example. You will also drive adoption, so that the frameworks and practices you build are used consistently across every team you support.
AI-enabled workflows are central to how we want this team to operate. Our engineers are shipping faster with AI coding tools, and quality has to keep pace. You will use AI heavily in your own work and help every QA engineer on the team do the same, while keeping the rigor a regulated financial environment demands.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the technical lead for about a dozen QA engineers across the product engineering teams building our member-facing mobile and web experience, setting priorities, coaching, reviewing work, and keeping practices consistent
- Own the regression strategy and execution for our member digital experience, keeping suites fast, reliable, and focused on real customer risk
- Design, build, and evolve shared automation frameworks for web, mobile, API, and performance testing, and drive their adoption across every team
- Dig into how data flows through our systems, and use that understanding to design and build test data creation and management systems that give teams reliable, realistic, and production-safe data
- Build and run performance testing practices, including load, stress, and baseline monitoring, and partner with engineering to act on the results
- Make AI-enabled flows part of daily work: AI-assisted test generation and maintenance, self-healing automation, intelligent test selection, failure triage, and risk analysis. Measure what actually saves time and catches defects
- Set standards for validating AI-generated code and tests, including where human review is required
- Stay hands-on wherever the work needs it, from debugging a flaky pipeline to building a framework feature to pairing on a hard test problem
- Work closely with product managers, engineers, and designers to bring quality into requirements, design, and delivery early
- Coordinate effectively with offshore and nearshore QA partners, with clear handoffs, shared standards, and strong communication across time zones
- Provide release readiness input and go/no-go recommendations based on risk-based testing, and maintain CI/CD quality gates that reduce escaped defects as the pace of change grows
- Raise tooling, environment, and infrastructure needs with platform partners and push to get them solved
- Track a focused set of quality metrics, such as escaped defects, flaky test rate, regression cycle time, and coverage, and use them to decide where to invest
About You
- 8+ years of quality engineering or test automation experience, including 2+ years leading, mentoring, or directing the work of QA engineers across multiple teams (formal or informal)
- Strong hands-on automation skills for web and mobile applications and the APIs behind them, using tools such as Playwright, Selenium WebDriver, Appium or Detox, and JUnit, in Java and/or JavaScript/TypeScript
- Experience building shared automation frameworks and driving adoption across multiple teams
- Hands-on experience with performance testing tools and approaches
- Strong data skills: you can read schemas, write SQL, and have built or managed test data creation and management solutions
- Hands-on experience using AI tools to improve testing outcomes, with real examples of what worked and what didn't. You understand the limits of AI and where human judgment matters most
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines for test automation (Jenkins or equivalent), plus JIRA and Git
- Experience working with distributed teams, including offshore and nearshore QA partners
- Good judgment balancing delivery speed, customer experience, quality, and risk, and the ability to communicate risks and tradeoffs clearly to engineers, product partners, designers, and leadership
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred
- Experience testing regulated financial applications, especially consumer lending or banking
- Experience with mobile-first consumer products, including iOS and Android release processes
- Experience with a test management tool such as Qmetry or TestRail
- Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, and relational databases such as MySQL, Postgres, or Oracle
- Experience with accessibility and visual testing
- Experience with AI coding assistants and agentic workflows in an engineering setting
