The Company
We are Alloy Therapeutics — a biotechnology ecosystem and Product Development Organization (PDO) empowering the global scientific community to make better medicines together. Through a community of partners, we democratize access to pre-competitive tools, technologies, services, and company creation capabilities that are foundational for discovering and developing therapeutic biologics. The company facilitates affordable, non-exclusive access to the entire drug discovery community from academic scientists, small and medium biotech, to the largest biopharma. At Alloy, we believe our industry should compete on getting the best drugs to patients as quickly as possible, not exclusive access to the best platforms. As a reflection of our relentless commitment to the scientific community, we reinvest 100% of our revenue in innovation and access to innovation. May the Best Drug Win.
Alloy has evolved from a startup into a global product development organization operating 11 divisions across 5 research sites in 4 countries on 3 continents. Our model - Integrated Independence - combines centralized capabilities with entrepreneurial operating divisions. Successful members thrive in our shared culture of accountability, deliberate trust, and open communication. As a team we aspire to work together to exceed expectations and collectively contribute across the global organization to always maintain our nimble, startup culture.
At Alloy, we have an ethos of "Mentorship-By-Apprenticeship" in all of our positions. We strive to have workers in the office when needed to interact organically and face-to-face. Of course, as a lab-based operation, our cells and animals grow 7 days a week, 365 days per year. We respect and value our colleagues for their hard work that requires them to be in the lab every day. We ask our people who have more flexible accommodations to appreciate their colleagues who have less flexibility. We are all one team!
About the Role at Alloy Therapeutics
Alloy is building the world’s first fully scaled Product Development Organization and forming a unified technology organization to accelerate drug discovery and bring the power of the PDO to partners around the world. Our Chief Technology Officer leads that organization and also serves as CEO of Vigilance, Alloy’s national security division, and is building three world-class teams at once: Scientific AI, Alloy’s operating engine, and National Security.
As VP, Business Operations, you are a member of the CTO’s senior leadership team and the operator who makes all three possible. Alongside our product managers and scientific and technical leaders, you will rigorously assess what we build and why. You will build the metrics that define success with the experts who own the work, then hold teams accountable for delivering on time, on quality, and on performance. And you will make sure the CTO’s attention goes only to the decisions that only the CTO can make. You do not need to be a scientist or an engineer. You do need to know how to get the truth from experts, turn it into commitments, and make those commitments stick.
That rigor serves a purpose beyond the internal system. The CTO, our partnerships leaders, and our national security team regularly sit across from company executives, senior government officials, and heads of state. You make sure they walk in as leverage: with command of what we are building, what we can commit to, and what we need, and with every commitment made in the room turned into owned, tracked work afterward. The CTO leads through empowerment and a servant-leader mindset, and many on the team have chosen to work with the CTO more than once. You will champion that culture while bringing the execution rigor that lets it scale. This is not a reporting layer: our leaders own their work, and your success shows up as faster teams, sharper decisions, and a CTO ready for every room.
We want to be direct about what this role demands. Some weeks, the CTO is abroad with partners while board materials, product decisions, high-stakes external meetings, and time-critical issues all converge at once. Your job is to make those weeks feel orderly. If that energizes you, read on. If you are looking for a narrowly defined scope and a predictable rhythm, this is not that role.
To apply, include a short note (300 words or fewer) describing an operating system or planning cadence you built from scratch, how you held teams to it, and what it let your principal do that they could not do before. Applications without this note will not be considered. Feel free to submit in place of a formal cover letter.
How You’ll Drive Impact
- Scientific AI: A hyper-growth technology business built to meet the moment in the era of agentic science, with and for partners around the world.
- Alloy’s operating engine: The technology organization that powers the next generation of Alloy’s operating model in this era.
- National security: An organization that empowers our national security and program leaders to position Alloy as the trusted partner of choice for companies and nations globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead business operations: Own the business operations function across technology and national security. Set its strategy and priorities, define how the organization plans and executes, and be accountable for its results. As the organization grows, build and lead a business operations team.
- Decide what we build, and why: Partner with product managers and scientific and technical leaders to pressure-test what each team is building, why it matters, and how it advances company goals. Bring the CTO clear trade-offs rather than status, and help stop work that does not earn its place.
- Build metrics with the experts: Work with subject matter experts to define objectives, key results, and product and delivery metrics that are rigorous, measurable, and owned by the teams accountable for them.
- Hold teams accountable: Hold leaders and teams to their commitments on time, on quality, and on performance. Spot slipping commitments, overlapping efforts, and work that does not tie to a priority, and bring the relevant leader and a fix before they become problems.
- Build and run the operating system: Design and run one operating rhythm across technology and national security, including weekly leadership meetings, monthly business reviews, quarterly planning and retrospectives, and annual goal setting. Establish a single source of truth for planning, execution, and review.
- Protect the CTO’s judgment: Make the decisions that can be made without the CTO and frame the decisions only the CTO can make with the options, trade-offs, and recommendations needed to decide quickly.
- Deliver real-time visibility: Give the CTO current, concise visibility into progress against goals, revenue pipeline, and risks, so the CTO can engage the CEO, peers, and the board with depth at any moment. Track pipeline and deals with commercial, partnerships, and national security leaders, and translate operating data into clear narratives for executive, board, and partner audiences.
- Make every engagement deal-ready: Before major partner, government, and investor engagements, assemble the cross-organizational fact base, pre-clear what we can commit to with the leaders who will deliver it, and equip the CTO and our partnerships and national security teams to act in the room. Own the content of briefings, drawing on division leaders, while the Senior Executive Assistant handles assembly and logistics. Afterward, turn every commitment made into owned, tracked work.
- Act for the CTO: Represent the CTO and the organization with senior leaders, the CEO’s office, corporate functions, and external partners and government stakeholders, and lead in the CTO’s place within agreed bounds. Quarterback parallel high-stakes deliverables, such as board materials and executive presentations, so nothing slows down.
- Champion the culture: Strengthen the organization’s culture of empowerment and ownership as it grows, while raising the standard of excellence the leadership team holds itself to.
- Build for hyper-growth: Identify where our processes, tools, and structures will not hold at the next stage of growth, and build what is needed. Serve as the team’s primary business partner to finance, people, legal, and other corporate functions on budgeting, hiring, and planning.
Required Qualifications
- Senior operator: Typically 12 or more years of experience, including at least 5 in senior leadership roles leading business operations or strategy and operations, or serving as chief of staff to a CTO, CPO, GM, or senior government official, in a high-growth technology, biotechnology, or public-sector organization.
- Functional leader: Has owned a business operations, strategy, or similar function for a multi-team organization and been accountable for its results. Experience building and leading a team is strongly preferred.
- Builder of operating systems: A track record of designing and launching a planning, goal-setting, or operating cadence from scratch for a multi-team organization through rapid growth, with clear evidence of what changed as a result.
- Portfolio judgment: Has worked alongside product managers and technical leaders to decide what gets built and what gets cut and can walk us through a decision they shaped and how it played out. You do not need to be a technical expert, but you know how to ask the questions experts cannot dodge.
- Metrics with experts: Has built goals and metrics together with scientific, engineering, or other subject matter experts, and held teams to them.
- Delivery accountability: Has held senior leaders and teams to delivery commitments on time, on quality, and on performance, often without formal authority, and can name leaders who would vouch for it.
- Principal readiness: Has prepared a principal for high-stakes external negotiations or government engagements and can show how that preparation changed the outcome.
- Trusted proxy and communicator: Has represented a senior executive with boards, executive teams, and external partners, including on sensitive matters, and has written board- and executive-level memos and briefings they can walk us through.
- Culture builder: Has built or turned around a team’s operating culture while raising its execution standards.
- Availability: Able to travel regularly, domestically and internationally, and to flex across U.S., European, and Asian time zones when the work requires it.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technology fluency: Has worked closely with software, AI, or scientific teams, for example as a product manager, engineer, consultant, or operator in a high-growth AI or biotechnology company and can engage critically with a technical roadmap.
- Front-office experience: Senior government front-office experience, such as chief of staff, special assistant, or executive secretariat for a senior official at the Department of State, the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, or a similar body. Familiarity with national security or international partnerships.
