About the Role
Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous technology ecosystem. We're building out a high-velocity team of multidisciplinary experts to turn real-world operations into high-quality data for our autonomous partners. This team is focused on the hardest problem in AV today: unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomy is now a data race—and Uber has an edge: We collect rare, real-world driving data at a scale and capital efficiency no one else can match.
Our AV Labs Hardware team is pioneering the next-generation E/E architecture for our cutting-edge L4 data collection vehicle fleet. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will design, develop, integrate, and validate electrical hardware and subsystems supporting high-performance compute, storage, sensors, networking, power distribution, and vehicle interfaces.
You will own key electrical designs from requirements through prototype, validation, and production release. This is a highly hands-on role where you will work across circuit design, schematic and PCB development, hardware bring-up, laboratory characterization, debugging, and vehicle integration while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams.
What You Will Do
- Own Electrical Hardware Design: Design and develop PCB and electrical subsystem solutions for compute, storage, sensor interfaces, networking, power distribution, and vehicle electronics. Own schematic design, component selection, circuit analysis, and PCB design reviews from requirements through production release.
- Develop Power & High-Speed Designs: Develop robust power conversion and distribution circuits, DC/DC converters, protection circuits, and high-speed electrical interfaces with consideration for Signal Integrity (SI), Power Integrity (PI), grounding, and EMI/EMC. Perform design analysis, simulation, component derating, tolerance analysis, and worst-case analysis as required.
- Drive Hardware Bring-Up, Debug & Validation: Lead hands-on bring-up, characterization, and validation of prototype hardware. Troubleshoot complex circuit, power, communication, signal integrity, thermal, and EMI/EMC issues, perform root-cause analysis, and drive design issues to resolution.
- Execute Vehicle Integration: Integrate electrical hardware into autonomous vehicle platforms and prototype builds. Collaborate with E/E Architecture, Mechanical, Firmware, Software, Perception, Harness, and Vehicle Integration teams to resolve electrical interfaces and cross-functional integration issues.
- Drive Design Release & Production Execution: Maintain schematics, BOMs, design documentation, and validation results, and participate in engineering design reviews. Drive engineering changes, component qualification, prototype builds, and technical execution with suppliers and manufacturing partners through production release.
Basic Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of hands-on experience in automotive wire harness design and development.
- Core Technical Expertise: Strong experience in both 2D schematics and 3D physical routing, with a specific focus on designing wire harnesses for high-speed data communication protocols such as Automotive Ethernet (100BASE-T1/1000BASE-T1) and CAN/CAN-FD bus.
- Software Proficiency: Proficiency in industry-standard professional EDS design, simulation, and CAD software (e.g., Siemens Capital/CHS, CATIA V5/V6, or AutoCAD).
Preferred Qualifications
- Automotive & Compute Hardware: Experience developing compute, storage, sensor, networking, or power electronics hardware for autonomous vehicles, automotive, robotics, aerospace, or other demanding embedded systems. Familiarity with automotive 12 V and/or 48 V electrical systems, automotive-grade components, transient protection, and vehicle electrical integration.
- Power, High-Speed, SI/PI & EMI/EMC: Experience with high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, Automotive Ethernet, GMSL/FPD-Link, USB, DDR, or similar technologies. Strong understanding of Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, PCB stack-up and routing, grounding, shielding, filtering, and EMI/EMC mitigation.
- Design Validation & Automotive Standards: Experience developing and executing Design Validation Plans covering electrical, thermal, fault, environmental, and EMI/EMC performance. Familiarity with automotive standards and test methods such as CISPR 25, ISO 16750, LV124, and related engineering practices including DFMEA, DFM/DFA, component derating, and worst-case analysis.
- Prototype & Production Execution: Demonstrated success taking electrical hardware through prototype bring-up, debugging, validation, design iteration, and production release. Experience working cross-functionally and with component vendors, PCB/PCBA suppliers, and manufacturing partners to resolve technical issues and deliver production-ready hardware.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $180,000 per year - USD $200,000 per year.
You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
