Sr. Product Designer

🧬 Let's accelerate medical innovation
At Power, we're making clinical trials easy to navigate for all patients.
Today, patients look to promising medical research when standard treatments have failed them. Unfortunately, there is no single source of truth that patients can understand and trust. The status quo is a government run website which is written in complex medical jargon that is impossible for most people to navigate.
At the same time, clinical trials are the bottleneck on medical innovation—new medicine takes almost 10 years to test and over 86% of all clinical trials are delayed because they can't find enough patients. This is one of the biggest problems facing the life science industry.
Power is the easiest way for patients to access promising new studies. Thus helping more patients find treatments and speeding up the progress of medical research as we go.
🏹 The role
As a Sr. Product Designer, you’ll take point on ensuring we offer an intuitive, supportive experience for patients grappling with serious illness. Power is still small & nimble, so you’ll lead your own research, contribute heavily to product direction, all while ensuring that we hold a high bar for design craft.
Tactically, in any given week you’ll spend time:
- Defining and driving research efforts to deeply understand the barriers that prevent patients from discovering, evaluating, and enrolling in clinical trials
- Leading all solution exploration aimed at removing this friction, all while
- Sweating the details by working closely with engineers to ensure that features are delivered & keeping a pulse on both qual- and quant- results post-production
- Facilitating a culture of continuous improvement, so that we’re regularly upgrading our process in pursuit of higher quality outputs
- Collaborate with an incredible cross-functional team
🤔 Some of the problems we'll be working on
We don't believe in strict job requirements, but if these problems sound fun and familiar, you're probably well suited for this gig:
- Overhauling our clinical trial search experience, to make discovery and comparison more intuitive for patients.
- Revamping our clinical trial profile pages, so that the most important information is clear and salient for patients.
- Identifying unnecessary friction in our patient account creation process, in order to help more patients find a trial that’s a fit for them.
- Building trust throughout the patient journey, to help new patients feel comfortable sharing the medical information we need to help them match to the most-promising trial.
🎯 About you
- You have shipped many consumer products over the years and understand what it takes to create world-class, consumer-oriented experiences.
- You’re energized by the opportunity to bob between company-level objectives and the granular, feature level minutiae that define a wonderful product. Your head is in the clouds while your feet are on the ground.
- You have a track record of contributing at a strategic level to long-term planning and quarterly roadmaps.
- You’re wholly comfortable leading your own research, and take pride in not just internalizing user needs but communicating these clearly to the broader team.
- You can merge foundational UX chops with powerful visual design, backed by customer insights.
- You can drive projects independently or work in a highly collaborative, x-functional manner. You naturally balance speed, craft, and business goals.
🌟 Nice to haves
- You have a personal connection to the space: much of our team has close family or friends who’ve interacted with clinical research from the patient perspective.
- You have a deep familiarity with marketplace businesses, clinical research, or health tech more broadly.
- You’ve led design teams of a larger scale, and will be able to help us see around corners.
- You have some other ‘spike’ or unique strength that would round us out! We’re always looking for complementary skills & experiences.
- You like to dive into the lit in your personal life — whether it be for sleep, nutrition, supplements, or something else entirely.
⚡️ Why Join Us?
- Your work will directly help a lot of patients. For depression and anxiety trials alone, every week XX,000 many patients turn to Power for guidance.
- The vibe is pristine. You’ll join a team that genuinely enjoys spending time together. It makes every day way more fun.
- You’ll be able to spend a lot of time talking to users. We have a huge pool of patients who are excited to share feedback that could benefit other patients.
- This group really cares about doing great work. This, combined with the fact that we have an office in North Beach (San Francisco), means work is much more energizing than it would be otherwise.
- You’ll be focused on meaty problems in a space that historically has suffered from a lack of design thinking. Two quick examples: (1.) how might we help patients compare different trials on the basis of the drugs’ side effect profiles? (2.) what norms/best practices need to change if the median age of our patients is 55 years old?
👋 The team

🔎 FAQ
What is the culture like at Power? Our team rallies around five values: urgency, selflessness, agency, obsession, and “these values will change”. To this last point, prior to our Series A we were focused on ‘pragmatism’ rather than ‘obsession.’
“How do I know if Power is too (early / late)-staged for me?”While we clearly have product market fit, we’re still much building out large parts of the business. This means that Power is probably too early for you if you’re hoping to primarily follow a script, facilitate an existing process, or look for a series of 5% wins in any given domain.
That said, as we cross 20 people, we’ve reached a point where no one is doing everything anymore. As a result Power is probably too late for you if you don’t have a craft you’re excited to continue to perfect.
Where are you located? What's your approach to remote work?Power was born as a remote-first team, and will always continue to hire senior individual contributors anywhere in the world.
That said, we’re increasingly moving towards a two-hub model:
- Most of our high-collaboration roles (product, design, bus. ops.) will be hired in San Francisco moving forward.
- We’ll likely continue to hire the majority of our engineers in-and-around Toronto.
There won’t be any formal in-office requirement, but would expect the San Francisco team to be in-person 4 days a week (Bask & Brandon will be in-person ~every day).
Outside of this, we've budgeted for quarterly team off sites over the course of the next year, as we believe work is more fun when you have a deep personal relationship with your colleagues.
What are the requirements? Do I need certain years of experience, or a background in healthcare? We have no 'formal' experience requirement, but think it's important that our earliest team members are highly autonomous.
Inversely, if you're at a point in your career where active mentorship is very important to you, this role likely isn't a fit for you.
How is the work life balance? We trust team members to manage their own schedules and believe that taking time off to recharge makes you more productive in the long run.
That said, we’re early enough that everyone’s work makes a big difference on the company’s trajectory. As a result, our team finds hard work fulfilling when we know it will be impactful.
Typically, we check out around 6pm to protect family time and then log-in later to finish anything that was left undone.
How are you funded?Happy to share specifics but we've raised a large Series A from top investors. We've intentionally raised enough such that we have time to get from our current clear signs of product market fit to sizeable scale.
How does your interview process work? This depends on the role, but roughly there are two stages. Initially meet with one or two members of your peers, and another with one or both founders. We try to move quickly on decisions so as not to waste anyone’s time.
“Do you have benefits?”Yes!
“What’s your vacation policy?”Unlimited. In practice, people tend to take ~1-2 weeks in the summer, and ~1-2 weeks in the winter.
