Job Description

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is the world leader in serving science, with annual revenue of approximately $40 billion. Our Mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Whether our customers are accelerating life sciences research, solving complex analytical challenges, increasing productivity in their laboratories, improving patient health through diagnostics or the development and manufacture of life-changing therapies, we are here to support them. Our global team of more than 100,000 colleagues delivers an unrivaled combination of innovative technologies, purchasing convenience and pharmaceutical services through our industry-leading brands, including Thermo Scientific, Applied Biosystems, Invitrogen, Fisher Scientific, Unity Lab Services, Patheon and PPD.

The Position

Key responsibilities:

• Design, implement, test and maintain robust modern C++ software for microscopy, imaging and hardware-control systems.

• Take end-to-end ownership of one or more substantial software components, from requirements and technical design through integration, release and lifecycle support.

• Contribute to system architecture and define clear component interfaces, data flows and integration approaches in collaboration with senior technical stakeholders.

• Investigate and resolve complex issues involving concurrency, memory and resource management, performance, reliability, inter-process communication and low-level hardware interaction.

• Develop and improve build, test, packaging and deployment automation; help maintain reliable CI/CD pipelines, reproducible builds and efficient developer workflows.

• Work closely with SQA, systems engineering, application development, hardware and product stakeholders to translate customer needs into practical, high-quality solutions.

• Prototype new algorithms and technologies, participate actively in design and code reviews, and share knowledge and effective engineering practices with the team.

• Remain hands-on with the codebase and microscopes, diagnose system-level failures and support software deployment and product lifecycle activities.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• Strong professional software-development experience and advanced proficiency in modern C++ (C++17 or later) for production-quality systems.

• Strong understanding of C++ object lifetime, RAII, templates, the standard library, concurrency, the memory model, error handling and performance characteristics.

• Ability to design and independently deliver non-trivial software components using sound design principles, well-defined interfaces and maintainable architecture.

• Experience with C++ toolchains, compilers and linkers, CMake or comparable build systems, and dependency management.

• Hands-on experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD, automated builds and tests, packaging, deployment and troubleshooting of build infrastructure.

• Experience with Linux, low-level hardware control or integration of software with physical devices.

• Strong debugging, profiling and root-cause-analysis skills across CPU, memory, I/O, timing and system-integration problems.

• Experience with code review and maintaining software quality in a collaborative development environment.

• Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders around the world.

Advantage:

• Jenkins or comparable CI/CD platforms, scripting with Python, Bash or PowerShell, and artifact or package-management tooling.

• Yocto, embedded Linux, cross-compilation and deployment to constrained or hardware-specific targets.

• Qt/QML development and integration between C++ services and user-interface components.

• Development of microscopy, scientific-instrumentation, imaging, acquisition or other hardware-intensive products.

• Firmware, FPGA or device integration, including platforms such as Zynq.

• Network and distributed-system programming, including inter-process communication, gRPC, REST APIs or WCF.

• Software supply-chain practices such as SBOM generation, dependency tracking and vulnerability remediation.

• Python or .NET interoperability, formal modelling tools such as Dezyne or Coco, or experience with control systems.

Competencies:

• Ability to work independently in a rapidly changing environment and deliver medium-to-large, technically complex assignments.

• Strong ownership, attention to product quality and a systematic approach to troubleshooting and risk reduction.

• Sound technical judgment and the ability to balance delivery, performance, maintainability and reliability.

• Constructive collaboration, clear communication and willingness to share knowledge through reviews and day-to-day teamwork.

• Curiosity, initiative and a continuous-improvement mindset.
